A completed summer reading packet is an expectation of students entering 5th grade. At the end of the year students were given a packet with lists of books and an explanation of projects to be completed and turned in the first week of school. A link to the summer reading can be found here
All students are required to read two books this summer from the provided list that meet the theme of Overcoming Obstacles.
In addition to reading the books students must also complete a response for each of the books read. For the first book students must complete a story chart that is modeled in the link above. For the additional books read, there are several options for the type of response:
1. Writing a brief summary of the book
2. Writing a book recommendation describing why someone may/may not be interested in the book
3. Describe a reaction, connection or thought related to a character or event in the story
4. Draw a neat/detailed sketch of a favorite part of the book
The responses will be the first quiz grade of the school year.
Students are also encouraged to read more than the two required books. Any student reading 4 or more books (and responses) will be entered to win a $50 gift card to the book fair in the fall.
