Summer Reading Project
Grade 5
Select 1 project from the 3 options below. Read the description of your selected project carefully. Complete the project to demonstrate your understanding of one of the titles on the required reading list. It is helpful to bring your book to school when you work on this project in class.
Option 1: Comic Strip
Create a minimum eight panel comic strip depicting how the character(s) overcame obstacles in the story. All comic strips will be hand drawn.
1. Each panel/picture must include descriptive dialogue and/or a caption to clearly depict the scene.
2. Pictures and dialogue must thoroughly describe and explain the scene.
3. Drawings must be neat, detailed, and colorful. Please display your best effort. No stick figures!
Option 2: Character Diaries
Choose two characters in one key scene from your book that show how these characters overcame obstacles. Think about how the author uses action and/or dialogue between characters to tell the reader what the characters are like.
1. Choose one scene from the book where the two characters interact and write an entry from each character’s point of view describing the event. This event must show how one or more of the characters overcame an obstacle.
2. Write both entries in the first person (using “I”) putting yourself into the shoes of each character.
3. Each character’s entry must be at least one paragraph long (4-5 sentences) and refer to the same event in the book. If there is no dialogue in this scene, create realistic dialogue based on the scene.
Option 3: Artifact Collection
Choose 5 artifacts/items from the book’s plot and consider how these items connect to key events in the story, reflecting the themes of overcoming obstacles. Artifacts should be real objects. In the event that you have difficulty finding a certain artifact, no more than 1 may be hand drawn or printed. Any drawings must be neat and include detail and color.
Record a description of each artifact on an index card to use when you present your artifacts to the group.
Your notecard will include the following:
